TrackMeNot

TrackMeNot is a lightweight browser extension that helps protect web searchers from surveillance and data-profiling by search engines. It does so not by means of concealment or encryption (i.e. covering one's tracks), but instead, paradoxically, by the opposite strategy: noise and obfuscation. With TrackMeNot, actual web searches, lost in a cloud of false leads, are essentially hidden in plain view. User-installed TrackMeNot works with the Firefox Browser and popular search engines (AOL, Yahoo!, Google, and MSN) and requires no 3rd-party servers or services.

I started this list as a collection of free awesome software for Windows that I'd found over the years. Features that help inclusion to the list: No-cost, open source, useful, resourse-light, good UI, and most importantly, me liking it.

Adeona: A Free, Open Source System for Helping Track and Recover Lost and Stolen Laptops

Adeona is an open source system for tracking the location of your lost or stolen laptop. You install the Adeona software on your laptop and forget about it - until your laptop goes missing. Then using the retrieval software, you can locate your laptop (assuming it has connected to the Internet since it was lost or stolen) and provide the retrieved information to the proper authorities. Adeona works on Windows, OS X and Linux.

Adeona is designed to use the Open Source OpenDHT distributed storage service to store location updates sent by a small software client installed on an owner's laptop. The client continually monitors the current location of the laptop, gathering information (such as IP addresses and local network topology) that can be used to identify its current location. The client then uses strong cryptographic mechanisms to not only encrypt the location data, but also ensure that the ciphertexts stored within OpenDHT are anonymous and unlinkable. At the same time, it is easy for an owner to retrieve location information.
