Microsoft To Unveil Free Beta Antimalware Service Tuesday - Security - IT Channel News by CRN

Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) is set for the launch of its free antimalware service, Microsoft Security Essentials, which is scheduled to go live in beta on Tuesday.

Altogether, Microsoft Security Essentials, which up until now was code- named Morro, is a free service that will offer comprehensive antimalware to combat viruses, Trojans, Internet worms, botnets and spyware. A full version of the service will be released later this year.

The service will protect users' PCs on XP and Vista and will give an added boost to the impending release of Windows 7, which will be available in October.

The software giant's impending launch of Microsoft Security Essentials comes as the company phases out the last vestiges of its subscription-based consumer antivirus product, Live OneCare, which was a commercial flop. The consumer product, which cost users $49.99 a year to cover three PCs, captured less than 2 percent of the security market share since its launch almost three years ago.

Microsoft announced in November 2008 that it planned to discontinue its Live OneCare product by June 30, replacing it with the release of a free consumer antivirus product during the first half of 2009.

Industry analysts contend that Microsoft Security Essentials will be on par with basic consumer antivirus and antimalware products from security industry competitors Symantec, McAfee and Trend Micro, which cost about $40 retail.

Symantec (NSDQ:SYMC) and McAfee have both downplayed the upcoming release of Microsoft Security Essentials, contending that the free product will likely not provide the breadth and quality of technologies that they offer in their comprehensive security suites and high-end point products, such as application firewalls, data loss prevention, backup and recovery, and encryption technologies. Others speculated that the free product might be nothing more than Microsoft taking another stab at entering the antivirus space with a revamped version of OneCare.

However, Microsoft maintained that the free service would not compete with security vendors but was instead intended for audiences that might not otherwise afford or have access to security software. In particular, Microsoft said that the service would target developing markets such as Brazil and China, which require increased IT security infrastructure but whose residents often lack financial resources to buy and install security software.

Over the last few years, Microsoft has made more inroads into the PC security space, raising tensions as it continued to compete with security giants such as Symantec and McAfee. The software giant was criticized by competitors in 2006 and 2007 for the release of its "secure" operating system Windows Vista, who claimed that Microsoft would deny them access to the heart of the operating system.

However, executives at AVG, a security company with a free antivirus offering, maintained that Microsoft's impending release of Security Essentials would not threaten their core business.

J.R. Smith, AVG CEO, said that AVG generated business by convincing users that they needed more than basic antivirus once they started using the company's free service.

"We realized a long time ago that basic AV is pretty commoditized," Smith said. "We've been making our living by making people understand there's more to it than that."

Smith said that AVG applauded Microsoft's efforts to distribute security software to a broad market, contending that it would raise general awareness about the need for security software, especially when surfing the Web.

"(Microsoft is) moving in parallel with their new operating system and probably focused on netbooks and the lower end of the market, where people do need more protection," Smith said. "They're going to increase awareness, and that's going to be good for all of us."

Coffee

Ah, coffee. I don’t think I’m in the minority when I say that coffee is a staple to my day. Web workers in general crave the bean, and without it the day doesn’t go as well.

There’s something about the smell of a fresh pot of coffee that makes the senses come alive. Many a cup of joe has sustained me through long nights of writing and coding deadlines.

I doubt I would have made many of those deadlines without the aide of our caffeinated friend.

Tectonic » Sun plugin gives MS Office users ODF support

ODFOne of the complaints against Microsoft has been that it doesn’t support the Open Document Format (ODF) with its Microsoft Office suite. And now that ODF is a ratified OSI standard (while Microsoft’s OOXML is still in the OSI process) more and more organisation and governments are looking at ODF as the document standard. For users needing to interact with ODF users but still stuck with Microsoft Office, Sun Microsystems has released an ODF plugin for Microsoft Office.

The plugin works with Microsoft Office 2007 (Service Pack 1 or higher), Microsoft Office 2003, XP and Microsoft Office 2000. The plugin integrates with Office’s Load and Save menu items so saving (or opening) an ODF document is straight forward.

Get the Sun ODF plugin here or simply download OpenOffice.org and avoid the need for a plugin.

How to Make a Bootable Anti-Malware CD or DVD | Remove-Malware.com

How to Make a Bootable Antivirus Disc

Purpose of this document.
This document will teach you how to make a bootable anti-malware ( bootable antivirus ) cd/dvd step-by-step.

Why Bootable Antivirus?
In a bootable environment we are running a stripped down version of windows in a ram disk (programs are loaded directly into ram), thus the hard drive on the PC is treated as attached storage (like a flash drive). In this state malware (malware consists of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, rootkits, etc) is helpless and totally at your mercy. This is the best free way to remove any piece of malware with a 100% success rate.

Steps:
Please follow all the steps below:

1. Go to http://ubcd4win.com/downloads.htm
2. Select a mirror with a green status. (like "Mirror#3" for example)
3. When you click on the mirror it will take you to another site where the download will be available.
4. Click the download link for Ultimate Boot CD and save the download to wherever you download stuff.
5. Once the installer has been downloaded double click it.
6. Choose your language
7. Click next about 3 more times and select the file path where you would like to install ultimate boot cd 4 win. Please note that you should have a drive with at least 5-10 gb of free space to allow for future plugin growth. I will choose C:\UBCD4Win. The install should take a few minutes.
8. Click Yes to the MD5 Hash Check. The install will continue once the hash check succeeds.
9. Click Yes to see if a patch file exists.
10. Click the checkbox to launch ubcd4winbuilder.exe.
11. Click the "i agree" button.
12. Click "NO" to searching for windows files.
13. Obtain a windows xp operating system disc w/SP2.
14. Explore the disc and copy the entire content (all the folders and files on the windows xp cd) to any location on your computer. You should allocate at least 700 MB of free space for the windows xp disc.
15. Open UBCD4win (if it's not already open). Click Source browse button (3 dots ...) and browse to your i386 folder. My path was C:\WindowsXPcd\ for example.
16. Next go to the media output section and choose a spot for your ISO image to be created. This ISO can be burned with almost any burning software. Once the ISO is burned it will be bootable.
17. Next, click the plugins button. Don't be too overwhelmed here, actually you should be very happy! Look at all those plugins!
18. Now it's time to update our anti-malware software packages.
19. The first one I have on my list is a-squared free anti-spyware. Click that line and then click the config button. A command prompt will automatically open and start downloading the latest updates for that program...totally awesome, isn't it!
20. So, now you need to update all the anti-malware programs in our plugin list. Click each one and then hit the config button.
21. After you're done configing/updating your plugins click the close button.
22. Next, click Build.
23. Click yes to create a directory and then click i agree.
24. At this point your ISO is created and is ready to be burned.

This concludes the How to Make a Bootable Antivirus CD tutorial.

You can head directly to each application's download page from the [Download] links following their write-ups, and see what Lifehacker originally wrote about them at the [LH Post] link. If there's a portable version of an application that you can run off a thumb drive and/or test out without installing, we've linked to that at [Portable], or added a "+Portable" to the main download link.

Onto the list!

6 Tips to Supercharge Mozilla Firefox with Middle Mouse Button

A typical computer mouse has 3 buttons but only two buttons remains dominant in our daily computer usage. For those who don’t know, the middle mouse can become quite useful too, if one know how to use it properly.

In this post, I will show you 6 tips to supercharge your Mozilla Firefox with the middle mouse button , thus making your web browsing experience better than before.

middle-mouse-button-on-firefox-screenshot

1- Click on a link with the middle mouse button to quickly open a link in a new tab. No more right click -> “Open Link in new tab”!

2- Press the Control (Ctrl) button and scroll the mouse wheel backward to increase Firefox’s font size. Scroll it forward to decrease the font size.

3- Press the Shift button and scroll the mouse wheel forward to move a page forward and scroll backwards to go the previous page.

Below are Mozilla Firefox’s about:config hack to modify hidden preferences (mouse related). Check out here on how to modify about:config.

4- Change the value of middlemouse.paste to true. This will let you paste a clipboard content to any text field with the middle mouse button.

5- Change the value of middlemouse.scrollbarPosition to true and restart your Firefox. The next time you click on a scrollbar location with the middle mouse button, Firefox will center the screen to that position.

6- Change the value of mousewheel.withaltkey.action to 1. This will enable you to scroll document by one page while pressing the Alt button.

That was all that I can find on how to optimize the usage of a middle mouse button in Mozilla Firefox. Feel free to add more tips and tricks by leaving a comment below. Enjoy!

51 Essential Programs For A Freeware Only PC | Freeware Mission

The Freeware Mission started exactly one month ago. My Windows XP powered PC crashed and I had to reinstall everything in it. I decided to try something different: install only freeware programs except Windows XP (I might try Ubuntu later ;). I was a little bit uncertain at first, because I was using some commercial programs (Microsoft Office, Nero, BitDefender etc.) and I wasn’t sure that I could find good freeware alternatives. But I did after all.

My computer can do now everything it could do before the crash, but now it has only freeware programs installed. Here is the list of essential freeware programs that I chose to install, please consider donating a few bucks to the people that made the open source programs presented in this list.
