eCalc - Free Advanced Online Calculator

eCalc

While I’m not very much into mathematical calculations and the windows calculator works just fine for me, I know that students doing research online, especially engineering students would love to use an advanced online calculator which has better functions than the windows calculator.

eCalc is a free calculator which has both the basic and the advanced versions. It’s browser based and easy to work with. It’s scientific calculator has advanced features like support for complex numbers, unit conversion, base conversion, and has a built in equation solver. Those interested in using this should first watch the demo video which gives a good explanation of the advanced features and how to use them.

Incredible Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts Which You Probably Don’t Know About

As my search for new methods to increase my browsing productivity continues, I have come across some more excellent keyboard shortcuts for Firefox (my preferred browser, and the ONLY one to use) which I will discuss here .

I am sure you’ll benefit from it if you use Firefox as your browser (and you should!).

1: Automatically complete .org and .net addresses

Yes, we know that if we type ‘google’ in the address bar and press Ctrl+Enter it directly goes to www.google.com . But what about .org and .net addresses? . In Firefox, Shift+Enter takes you to .net and Ctrl+Shift+Enter takes you to .org addresses automatically . So if you wanna go to Problogger , just type the word in firefox address bar and press Shift+Enter .

2: Alt + D

You can use this to navigate directly to the browser address bar of firefox. Very useful.

3: Ctrl+T and Ctrl+Shift+T

Ctrl+T helps you to open a new tab and Ctrl+Shift+T reopens the last closed tab.
This comes quite handy in case you accidently close a tab. Another way to do this would be go to History -> Recently closed tabs.

4: Alt+Enter

This can be an extremely useful shortcut. It automatically opens a website in another tab when you highlight it in the autocomplete list. For example you want to go to Facebook and you start typing www.face…, in the address bar and it starts showing the list below. You just need to use the down arrow key to highlight the selection (facebook.com in this case ) and press Alt+Enter so that it opens in a new tab.

5: Use of Delete Key

The Delete key can be pretty useful because it helps you delete specific addresses in browser history or autocomplete forms. For example in the diagram below, when I type ‘a’ in google search I get 3 entries . If I want to delete the 2nd entry from autocomplete history , I’ll just point to it and press Delete key . Simple, isn’t it .
use of delete key

6: Ctrl+Tab

Ctrl+tab helps you to navigate between different firefox tabs quite easily.

7: Ctrl+[1,2....9]

Ctrl+tab can help you navigate alternate tabs but if you are a heavy tab user like me and want to go to a specific tab then just use Ctrl+corresponding tab number. Ex:To go to the 3rd tab use Ctrl+3 .

8: Spacebar and Shift+Spacebar OR PageDown and PageUp

Spacebar or PageDown key scrolls down the webpage you’re on and Shift+Spacebar or PageUp scrolls up the webpage you’re on .

9: The Middle Mouse Button

This is not a keyboard shortcut but it is an excellent shortcut . Just point to a link anywhere on a webpage and press the middle mouse(scroll) button . It opens the page in a new tab .
I hope these shortcuts will enhance your browsing productivity with Firefox . Do you know about other interesting shortcuts which I may have missed ?

Firefox 3 super speed increase

Following on from my previous article, Firefox 3 Easter Eggs, I have discovered that broadband users can get a significant speed increase from Firefox just by changing a couple of settings. Firefox is distributed with settings that will work with any machine or setup, but really anyone with a half-decent connection can make these changes and get a great speed increase, and here's how you do it!

Inside the address bar type:

about:config

and then find:

network.http.pipelining

network.http.proxy.pipelining

and set them both to "true". This adjusts the pipelining settings.

Then find

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

and set it to 8, though you should feel free to play with this number a little and tweak it as you see fit - the article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.http.pipelining.maxrequests suggests that 8 is easiliy sufficient.

Finally, right-click on any setting and select 'new' and then 'integer'. Set the name to "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" (you might want to copy & paste it) and set the value to "0" (zero). This removes the render delay.

And hey presto you should notice a sigificant speed increase from a simple optimization!

Media Player Compared

Now a days, video is becoming part of our life, it’s like we can’t live without video. Because of these need, more and more players has been created to accommodate video files.
In this article there are gonna be 4 Media Player I will compare, so that you will have clue, which one you should install.
They are: Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, VLC, and Kantaris Media Player. All of this are free to use.

*I’m using Transformers 720p movie as an example.

Kantaris Media Player

I’m sorry I couldn’t provide sample as this player didn’t compatible with all my capturing softwares.

My personal favorite still goes to VLC and 2nd is Media Player Classic. VLC support many video format, including those movie trailer that usually .mov, other players can’t play it. VLC can play it without installing any other codec.
Windows Media Player in the other hands, offer so many enhancement in video or audio, but lack of format support, like 3gp from my phone, or mp4.
Kantaris is a new to me, my first experienced with this player, the pictures too bright, compare to other 3, I don’t even set the brightness yet.

I suggest you get your Media Player Classic program from free codec like K-Lite Codec, instead of downloading stand alone player, as it will not support many movie format. I’m experiencing difficulties even playing .avi format.

More Ways To Speed Up Windows XP | Connected Internet

Athough I’ve just got a new PC that is scarily fast (well, compared to my old machine) I’ve still spent quite a bit of time trying to make it even faster, and I’ve discovered some handy tweaks that I haven’t used before along the way.

These aren’t covered in my 10 Simple Ways To Speed Up Windows XP or 10 Intermediate Ways To Speed Up Windows XP which together account for around 20% of my daily traffic. Once again, I’ve tried to focus on changes that any user can replicate and that won’t damage a system.

Speed Up Boot Times I

This tweak works by creating a batch file to clear the temp and history folders everytime you shutdown so that your PC doesn’t waste time checking these folders the next time it boots. It’s quite simple to implement:

    1. Open Notepad and create a new file with the following entries:
  • RD /S /q “C:\Documents and Settings”UserName without quotes”\Local Settings\History”
  • RD /S /q “C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\History”
  • RD /S /q “D:\Temp” <–”Deletes temp folder, type in the location of your temp folder”
  • 2. Save the new as anything you like but it has to be a ‘.bat’ file e.g. fastboot.bat or deltemp.bat

    3. Click ‘Start’ then ‘Run’

    4. Type in ‘gpedit.msc’ and hit ‘ok’

    5. Click on ‘Computer Configuration’ then ‘Windows Settings’

    6. Double-click on ‘Scripts’ and then on ‘Shutdown’

    7. Click ‘Add’ and find the batch file that you created and then press ‘Ok’

µTorrent

µTorrent, the BitTorrent client that is..

Micro-Sized Yet Feature Filled

Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange.

Resource-Friendly

µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all. Additionally, the program itself is contained within a single executable less than 220 KB in size.

Skinnable and Localized

Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. If your language isn't available, you can easily add your own, or edit other existing translations to improve them!

Actively Developed and Improved

The developer puts in a lot of time working on features and making things more user-friendly. Releases only come out when they're ready, with no schedule pressures, so the few bugs that appear are quickly addressed and fixed.
