PC Hacks: Tweak Your Firefox for Super Fast Web Browsing

Fast loading web pages while surfing the Internet may have more to do with your web browser settings and preferences than your Internet connection speed.

Try these easy Firefox tweaks and you’ll see that you’re surfing the Internet from 3 to 30 times faster!

  • To get started, open your Firefox web browser. In the address/location bar type about:config and then press your Enter key.
  • In the Filter bar type network.http.pipelining. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from False to True.
  • In the Filter bar type network.http.pipelining.maxrequests. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name and change the value from 4 to a higher number anywhere from 10 to 30. I set mine to 30.
  • In the Filter bar type network.http.proxy.pipelining. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from False to True.
  • In the Filter bar type network.dns.disableIPv6. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from False to True.
  • In the Filter bar type plugin.expose_full_path. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from False to True.
  • In the Filter bar type network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help. Now, you are going to create a new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in nglayout.initialpaint.delay and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type 0 (that’s a zero) and click OK.
  • In the Filter bar again type network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help. Now, you are going to create another new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in content.notify.backoffcount and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type 5 and click OK.
  • In the Filter bar again type network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help. Now, you are going to create another new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in ui.submenuDelay and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type 0 (that’s a zero) and click OK.
Now, close your web browser and restart it. You’ll see how much faster web pages are loading. I sure did.

Six Best Firefox-3 Add Ons For Images

Firefox is known for its cool and exquisite add ons and when it comes to playing with images online, there are a lot of such extensions available. However not all those add ons are compatible with Firefox 3 and not each one of them delivers the desired user experience.

Hence I decided to pick six add ons out of the available add ons for images. These six are really awesome and also compatible with the latest version of Firefox.

1. FoxSaver

FoxSaver is an awesome photo add on which converts your firefox browser to a screensaver / digital photo frame. After installing it, you get a small FoxSaver button in your status bar from where you can initiate it. It also supports Media RSS. I was very impressed by this add on without a doubt. You have to use it to experience it.

2. Piclens

I’ve already talked about Piclens in my post on incredible tools to browse Flickr photos and since I’m talking about the best firefox add ons for images, I am compelled to mention it again. It’s an amazing 3D graphic tool and definitely a must try.

3. Save Image in Folder

The Save Image in Folder firefox add on executes a very simple but very useful task. It adds an option to your right-click through which you can directly save an online image to your computer. You will first have to create or assign a particular folder in the add on options so that you can directly save the images to that folder. And if you are looking for license free stock images then check these stock photo websites to find such images.

4. Picnik

The Picnik add on makes online image editing quick and easy by adding menu options and toolbar icon directly import and edit the image in the well known web based image editor’s interface.

5. Image Zoom

Image Zoom adds a one click zoom functionality to images on the web. You could either use the options in the right click (context menu) or a combination of mouse buttons and scroll wheel. It works seamlessly with the latest firefox version.

6. Better Flickr

Last but by no means the least, the better flickr firefox extension developed by the amazing LifeHacker team adds a host of extra menu options to Flickr like more user links, photo magnifier and thumbnails enhancer. You can read a detailed explanation of it’s features here.
I hope you like these cool extensions. If you know about other such image related add ons which are compatible with the latest version of firefox then let’s hear about them in the comments.

Incredible Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts Which You Probably Don’t Know About

As my search for new methods to increase my browsing productivity continues, I have come across some more excellent keyboard shortcuts for Firefox (my preferred browser, and the ONLY one to use) which I will discuss here .

I am sure you’ll benefit from it if you use Firefox as your browser (and you should!).

1: Automatically complete .org and .net addresses

Yes, we know that if we type ‘google’ in the address bar and press Ctrl+Enter it directly goes to www.google.com . But what about .org and .net addresses? . In Firefox, Shift+Enter takes you to .net and Ctrl+Shift+Enter takes you to .org addresses automatically . So if you wanna go to Problogger , just type the word in firefox address bar and press Shift+Enter .

2: Alt + D

You can use this to navigate directly to the browser address bar of firefox. Very useful.

3: Ctrl+T and Ctrl+Shift+T

Ctrl+T helps you to open a new tab and Ctrl+Shift+T reopens the last closed tab.
This comes quite handy in case you accidently close a tab. Another way to do this would be go to History -> Recently closed tabs.

4: Alt+Enter

This can be an extremely useful shortcut. It automatically opens a website in another tab when you highlight it in the autocomplete list. For example you want to go to Facebook and you start typing www.face…, in the address bar and it starts showing the list below. You just need to use the down arrow key to highlight the selection (facebook.com in this case ) and press Alt+Enter so that it opens in a new tab.

5: Use of Delete Key

The Delete key can be pretty useful because it helps you delete specific addresses in browser history or autocomplete forms. For example in the diagram below, when I type ‘a’ in google search I get 3 entries . If I want to delete the 2nd entry from autocomplete history , I’ll just point to it and press Delete key . Simple, isn’t it .
use of delete key

6: Ctrl+Tab

Ctrl+tab helps you to navigate between different firefox tabs quite easily.

7: Ctrl+[1,2....9]

Ctrl+tab can help you navigate alternate tabs but if you are a heavy tab user like me and want to go to a specific tab then just use Ctrl+corresponding tab number. Ex:To go to the 3rd tab use Ctrl+3 .

8: Spacebar and Shift+Spacebar OR PageDown and PageUp

Spacebar or PageDown key scrolls down the webpage you’re on and Shift+Spacebar or PageUp scrolls up the webpage you’re on .

9: The Middle Mouse Button

This is not a keyboard shortcut but it is an excellent shortcut . Just point to a link anywhere on a webpage and press the middle mouse(scroll) button . It opens the page in a new tab .
I hope these shortcuts will enhance your browsing productivity with Firefox . Do you know about other interesting shortcuts which I may have missed ?

Firefox 3 for Windows update

I am now using Firefox 3 on my Windows PC (have had it on Ubuntu for ages now it seems). It uses less memory and loads faster. Some add-ons were not compatible but most were.

I had a small problem, the Skype Extensions for Firefox (not the main Skype program) caused Google Maps NOT to load. Someone else at Google groups had the same problem. One can start Firefox in SAFE mode from the Start menu and this will allow it load without any addons. I did this and saw Google Maps works fine with Firefox, so the culprit had to be an Add on. By disabling them one by one until Google maps worked I was able to single out Skype extesnion. Why is caused this problem I don't know. Probably something to do with latching on to certain ports that the other program needed.

Better security, better backup of user setting and data. Better bookmarks overall and search bar is vastly improved.
